Gary Ridgway was born on February 18, 1949, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Gary has two brothers. At a very young age, it was apparent that Gary was not very intelligent. He supposedly tested with an I.Q. level of 82. During his adolescence, Gary often acted out with aggressive behavior. He even once attacked a six-year old boy by stabbing him repeatedly in the ribs. According to the victim, Ridgway left the scene saying “I always wondered what it would be like to kill someone."
Ridgway married Claudia Barrows soon after high school. He then enlisted into the Navy and served in Vietnam. Shortly after his enlistment, his first marriage ended. Ridgway went on to marry two more times, Judith Mawson being the first of the remarriages. His first two marriages of three ended due to infidelity by both partners. His third wife, Marcia, claimed that Ridgway had placed her in a chokehold at one point. She also said that Gary would often request to have sex in public or in peculiar areas. It was said that Ridgway had an “insatiable sexual appetite."
Once arrested, a cloud of hatred surrounded Ridgway. Addressing Mr. Ridgway, Judge Jones said, ''There is nothing in your life that was significant other than your own demented, calculating and lustful passion of being the emissary of death.'' –New York Times
However, Gary Ridgway possesses a personality disorder. His disorder is known as Borderline Personality Disorder. Borderline personality disorder, as categorized by the DSM, has numerous requirements that need to be met in order to acquire the disorder. The requirements include: unstable relationships, erratic emotions, damaging behavior, impulsive, unpredictable aggressiveness and sexual behavior, monophobia, and difficulty handling anger. As stated earlier, Gary Ridgway is most of these things; he had a damaging behavior problem, he had unstable relationships with his mother and peers, and he had unpredictable anger and sexual behavior. He forced two of his wives to have sex with him at least six times a day. It is also thought that these sexual frustrations in which he takes out on prostitutes; comes from a sexual desire for his mother.
